Cemetery Project

El Paso and Teller Counties, Colorado, Cemetery Project

Between 1996 and 2002 volunteers from the Pikes Peak Genealogical Society collected tombstone and sexton record information from
71 cemeteries in the Pikes Peak region. This information was published in 11 books containing over 84,000 entries from cemeteries
in El Paso and Teller Counties. A cd containing all the information in these 11 books is also available for $10. This dual-county
project was combined on the available cd because Teller County was once a part of El Paso County and families are often associated
with both areas. A standard format has been used in these books that maintains the relative location of all burial plots, thereby
maintaining the integrity of cemetery layout for research purposes. The main database listing of cemetery records is sequenced by
layout of the cemetery. The surname index at the rear of each book references those numbers. Individuals mentioned on tombstones
or in sexton records, but not buried in the cemetery, are also listed in the surname index and reference the associated headstone.
All data found on tombstones and in sexton records is listed in the book.

See the publications section of this website for a list of all the books and cd and ordering information.

A partial database of information found in these books has been submitted to the USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project and can
be found online at http://www.usgwtombstones.org. In many cases, significant additional information is contained in the books
(names, dates and locations) that is not viewable on the website database. Special Collections of the Pikes Peak Library District
can provide lookups for this information. Click on the “PPLD Genealogy” tab above to access the Special Collections page. The
“Branches and Hours” line will provide contact information for Special Collections.
